Spiritual Disciplines

Through different seasons of our lives, we will need to learn how to draw closer to the Lord and to do so we need to practice of the spiritual disciplines.

What are spiritual disciplines?

Spiritual practices to develop and exercise discipline and self control to be able to grow closer to the Lord. Practices like bible study, prayer, worship, service, fasting, solitude, meditation, confession, submission, etc.  Some of the disciplines you will use daily, others you will not engage with them as often.  Check out " What are Spiritual Disciplines" Lifeway Voices, Christina Zimmerman.

Let's Practice

Scripture Reading

Spiritual disciplines are vital to our spiritual transformation. Each discipline takes time to develop, but it is worth it. We desire to build a deep and close relationship with the Lord. How do we do that? Where do we begin?

Let’s start with His Word! The Bible is one of the main ways the Lord speaks to us. As we read and study the holy scriptures, we learn of God’s love for us, His plan, and His purpose. What we hear from God should be scriptural based. We must read His Word daily to distinguish His voice over all the noise in this life. We need to know what His Voice sounds like.

Like any other relationship, we need to spend time with Him. This week, determine a time and place to spend with the Lord in His Word. Start with prayer and ask the Lord for wisdom and understanding as you study the Word. Read a Psalm to familiarize yourself with who God is and how to praise and worship Him.  Read a Proverb daily to learn how God wants us to live through the understanding of His law and wisdom. You will find out what pleases Him and how to live Life His Way!

Prayer

Did you know that prayer is one of the weapons of our warfare?  Pair prayer with the sword of the Spirit (the Word of God). Prayer is a mighty weapon.

Prayer leads us to a deeper relationship with the LORD.  Prayer leads us to the source of our hope and strength.  Prayer leads us to wisdom and knowledge. Prayer leads us to our Comfort during difficult circumstances.

Prayer is as natural as conversationally talking with the LORD.

When approaching the LORD, you must be humble, open, and honest about how you feel and what is going on in your life.  The most important thing to the LORD is your heart.  Wait on the LORD and listen for His Voice. He will provide guidance, comfort, wisdom, and an answer. Trust Him!

This week, take time to practice daily the spiritual discipline of prayer.  Take the time to know the LORD's heart and know Him!

The LORD invites us to pray.  Here are a few verses:

"And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people."(Ephesians 6:18)

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." (Philippians 4:6)

"Draw near to God and He will draw near to you." (James 4:8)
